RGG: Frozen Dead

Matt Hargenrader of the Random Gamers Guild requested a few more illustrations, and I have not released them yet on the blog. As I have been so busy illustrating a ton of different things, from +Jeff Talanian's AS&SH kickstarter that required a few more illustrations, and +Jason Chapman's ongoing list of stuff, to +Batro Noban's requests, and my current work on the Lost City of Gaxmoor's Isometric work for their kickstarter, not to mention a few projects that have not been released to the world yet.

So, getting back to the point of this, here is the Frozen Dead.

These creeping souls are the frozen remains of people long caught in the frozen regions everywhere.

It was a challenge to give him that cold look in black and white, but the background helped, as did the bits of icicles hanging off of him. As an added touch I created a frozen "steam" emanating from his flesh as well.

I know this is a short post, but my kids are waiting to embark on another adventure!

Thanks for looking, comments always welcome.

Random Gamers Guild: Jetch'Kekki

Finishing up some more work for Matt Hargenrader, and the Random Gamers Guild, "Dwellers in the Dark Places". This post will include a race of Bird-men, with close approximations to the Azetec/Mayan empires.

Without further ado....the Jetch'Kekki.

This first group is comprised of their elite warrior class (left), their shaman class (middle), and their low class fighter (right). I wanted to give each of them a distinct look.

Starting with the elite warrior class I made them very bulky, heavy armor adorned their shoulders, and I armed him with both a pole-arm, and a sword. The armored upper leg protection rounded out the bulk look.

For the shaman class I wanted him to be a presence in the drawing, but he could not be bigger than the elite fighter. I raised his arms up and had him chanting something arcane. He also has a bit of armor on his chest, though I went for a more ceremonial bone and bead type armor, akin to that of the American Indians. He also got a unique head-dress with jewels and bling.

The lower class warrior had to be smaller, and I wanted to set him apart from the other two, while keeping him in the same illustration. Turning him to the viewers right accomplished that nicely. I also spaced him just a bit from the shaman, almost as if he is shunned by the other classes. Outfitted with a stone spear gave him a very rustic look.

I am quite proud of the feather details that came about on these critters. A bit more advanced than say the Terror Bird illustration I did for AS&SH. I can see myself improving slightly.

Here is the next set.

The final two classes are the artisan (left) and the Cult of the Feathered Snake Monk class (right).

There are many artisans within the tribes of the Jetch'Kekki however, I chose to illustrate the artist....hmmm, wonder why. The unique thing about the Artisans is that they are all female. Now the challenge here was to make a terrifying bird person look like a female.

I accomplished this by giving her a more laid back expression of body. and her head was smallish, with curved features including long eye lashes, cheek bones, bigger, bolder eyes and a slightly smiling face. The look was completed by placing a jeweled tiara on her brow and distinctly placing the feathers around her head in more of a flowing hair-like fashion. I also added decoration to her dress at the shoulders and hem, as well as giving her arm feathers a bit more flair.

No artist is complete without a paintbrush and pallet so those got thrown on as well. Overall quite pleased with her.

For the Monk, I needed to have a foreboding, powerful feel, sort of that cross between Yoda and the Emperor from Star Wars. I put him in a beak down position with him looking directly at the viewer, put a ruffled brow over his eyes, holding the hood back, and had him grasping an ornate snake feather god cane. The robes I filled out with priestly like vestments and the snake feather god token feathers upon his shoulders.

I finished both pieces off with a motif featuring bird like masks in a rectangle stone work carving.

I am quite pleased with both illustrations, hope you are too.

Hyping Hyperborea part duex...

North Wind Adventures and  +Jeff Talanian's kickstarter for three new RPG modules has two days left, is completely funded and has reached several stretch goals. If you have NOT been under a rock for the past few years, you know that his Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea rules set (an ultra cool variant on the worlds most popular RPG) has been hailed as a superb system that incorporates Appendix N literature with heavy influences from the likes of Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and others.

These three adventure modules have illustrations by myself, the amazing John Bingham, and awesome Mark Allen, with covers by Peter Mullen, Val Semeiks, and Charles Lang.

"Beneath the Comet" written by Ben Ball, with maps by Glynn Seal of Monkeyblood Designs, features this illustration of Ape-men.

"Ghost Ship of the Desert Dunes" written by Jeff Talanian, with maps by Monkeyblood Designs features these illustrations of Radioactive Ants, and Radioactive Viking Zombies.

AND

"Forgotten Fane of the Coiled Goddess" written by +Joe Salvador with maps by Monkeyblood Designs, and features all of these Dinosaurs, as well as the Terracotta Warriors and the Monkey-men of Lamuria.

If you find you have a few dollars extra in your pockets, and you want to add to your collection of RPG's and you love Swords and Sorcery, and you read this blog, you should really pick these up while you have a chance during the Kickstarter.

Due to the stretch goal being reached, I will be drawing a few more for this great set of adventure modules. I am super excited to be working again on AS&SH illustrations and cannot wait to start sketching.

Thank you for stopping by, and comments are always welcome.

City on the legs of a spider

+Batro Noban requested I illustrate a city upon the legs of a spider, he wanted it mechanical, and post apocalyptic/medieval/Favela style buildings.

I rendered a quick sketch and then started in on inks.

On the original I had a lush area under the crawling creeping city, the commissioner wanted it to be more desert like.

Here is the final image below.

It was challenging to get all of the buildings crowded together, I had them going in all different directions, and even hanging from the lower part of the spider.

For the legs I made them look futuristically-mechanical. Wires and hydraulic pistols coupled with gears and mechanisms. The city I suppose would be steam powered or some other sources that poured steam and light smoke out of the stacks that can be seen. The background was challenging, but I think I captured the feel that the commissioner wished.
